The first 40 days: caring for yourself after delivery

Dr. Siddhika Patil·22 May 2026·6 min read

So much attention goes to the baby - but a new mother needs looking after too. A gentle guide to recovering well after birth.

The weeks after birth are a huge change for your body and your mind. In all the excitement around the baby, the mother's own recovery often gets forgotten. It should not - how you heal now matters for years to come.

Your body is healing

Whether you had a normal delivery or a cesarean, your body has done something enormous and needs time. Bleeding, soreness, and tiredness are all normal in the early weeks. Rest whenever you can, and do not rush to 'get back to normal'.

  • Eat warm, nourishing, home-cooked food and drink plenty of water.
  • Accept help with housework so you can rest and feed the baby.
  • Move gently - short walks are good, heavy work is not, for now.
  • Keep any stitches clean and watch for redness or fever.

Your feelings matter too

It is very common to feel weepy or low in the first couple of weeks. But if that heavy feeling does not lift, or you cannot sleep even when the baby sleeps, please talk to someone. This is common and it can be helped - you are not a bad mother for feeling it.

A rested, cared-for mother is the best thing for a new baby. Looking after yourself is not selfish - it is part of caring for your child.

Do not skip your check-up

A postnatal visit lets us check your healing, your feeding, and how you are feeling. It is also the right time to talk about family planning when you are ready. Message the clinic anytime a worry comes up.
