IUI vs IVF: which fertility treatment is right for you?

Dr. Siddhika Patil·30 April 2026·6 min read

Two common fertility treatments, often confused. Here's the honest difference - and why the simpler one is often tried first.

When couples first hear about fertility treatment, IUI and IVF often get mixed up. They are quite different in cost, effort, and when they are used. Understanding both helps you make a calm, informed choice.

What is IUI?

In IUI, healthy sperm is gently placed inside the uterus at the right time in your cycle. It is simple, low-cost, almost painless, and does not need surgery or admission. It is often the first step for mild problems or an unexplained delay.

What is IVF?

In IVF, the egg and sperm are joined in the lab and the embryo is placed in the womb. It is more involved and more expensive than IUI, but it can help in situations where IUI cannot - such as blocked tubes or a very low sperm count.

Which one is for you?

There is no single right answer - it depends on your age, your reports, and how long you have been trying. As a rough guide:

  • IUI is often tried first for mild or unexplained problems.
  • IVF is suggested when tubes are blocked, sperm count is very low, or when IUI has already been tried a few times.
  • Your age matters - after 35, we sometimes move to IVF sooner to save precious time.
A good doctor will not push you straight to the most expensive option. The right treatment is the one that fits your body and your reason for delay.

The best next step is a simple talk with your test reports. From there, you will get an honest recommendation and a clear idea of the cost before you decide anything.
