PCOS explained: symptoms, causes and simple care

Dr. Siddhika Patil·2 July 2026·5 min read

Irregular periods, weight changes or extra hair? PCOS is very common and very manageable. Here's what it is and how care begins.

PCOS (some call it PCOD) is one of the most common hormone problems in women, and yet it causes a lot of confusion and worry. The good news is simple: it is very manageable once you understand it.

Common signs

  • Periods that come late, are irregular, or sometimes skip.
  • Weight gain that is hard to lose, especially around the tummy.
  • Pimples, oily skin, or extra hair on the face and body.
  • Trouble conceiving for some women.

You will not have every sign - PCOS looks a little different in each woman, which is why care should never be one-size-fits-all.

What actually helps

Care usually starts with lifestyle, not heavy medicines. Even a small, steady weight loss can bring periods back and improve how you feel. From there, we treat what matters most to you - whether that is regular periods, clearer skin, or planning a baby.

PCOS is not something you have done wrong, and it is not something you simply have to live with. With the right plan, most women feel much better.

When to get checked

If your periods have been irregular for a few months, or you notice these signs together, a simple check-up and a few basic tests can give you clear answers. The earlier you understand it, the easier it is to manage.
